Make your home “lead safe”

One of the most sweeping new federal laws that impact contractors in all states went into effect April 2010. These regulations, established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), require that contractors, renovation builders, or home maintenance personnel undergo certification training for maintaining a lead-free painting environment when working on dwellings, schools, or child care centers built prior to 1978. So far we have been working hard for the last 16 months to comply with our jobsite manners and our own regulatory paperwork for future government auditing,

Now that dozens of our clients have been given “The Packet” that we are under enormous financial pressure in the form of mandatory fines to give to all of our clients, and we have tested dozens of jobs and done some “Lead Safe” work I have witnessed a new phenomenon- clients stopping work out of fear of lead paint and the EPA regulation.

This seems to come from Three areas

  1. Cost- Cost seems to be in the area of 1-2% of job costs in most cases, not thousands of dollars
  2. Safety Fears- Clients have not had health issues from jobs we have done, or other of our competitors in the area before 2010, we are simply taking even more precautions over an issue that didn’t cause problems for clients before. Now you can feel even MORE safe than before.
  3. Regulatory Fears- Clients cannot get in trouble for having lead, we can if we don’t follow procedure in the field or with regulatory paperwork.

Hopefully that can put you more at ease with the new federal regulations guiding what we do for you in your personal homes.

Thanks!
